MAKE ME LAUGH, PLEASE!

Someone make me laugh! PLEASE!

Is it just me or could you use more laughs too? The world has been so heavy lately, we need some relief from all the noise, clamor and stress. Can someone just make me laugh?

Laughter is rumored to be good medicine, but at the same time be contagious. Both are true. Ever notice how laughing just improves a mood? Is that a psychological thing? Turns out, laughter is really very healthy for all of us. Laughter is more contagious than any cold or sniffle. It can bind people together. Laughing causes us to relax. All of our walls come down, and we lay down the heaviness of sadness or depression.

Laughter sparks changes, positive physical changes, in the body. Humor and laughter are the antidote to stress and pain. A good laugh triggers endorphins or work as a temporary pain reliever. Even the blood vessels respond to laughter. The blood vessels expand and blood flow increases. Stress can vanish when one is in the middle of a good belly laugh. How can you feel sad, anxious or angry while laughing? You cannot.

I recently read a biography about Theodore Roosevelt. In it was a story of how Roosevelt's mother, a lady from Georgia, was a Confederate sympathizer during the Civil War. The Roosevelts were from New York and staunch Union supporters. When the future President got into trouble this particular time with his mother, he began to pray out loud for the Union army and that God be on the side of the Yankees to defeat the Rebels. His mother laughed and did not punish him, although his father did later on for the deed. Humor can be used to defuse uncomfortable or even difficult situations. Children have forever tried to make their parents laugh to dodge punishments. Sometimes it works and sometime it does not.

Laughter is something best when shared. There is just something so binding when a group of people are partaking in some good old belly laughing together. At that moment, at that very instant, the world (at least in that space) is perfect-- absolutely perfect.

Sometimes, even a laugh can make us laugh. In the clips of the baby and the one of The Comedy Barn, it is not the content of the language or an animation that makes us laugh, it is the mechanical thing, the laugh itself that is so funny. Some folks just are like that--have the funniest types of laughs that create an atmosphere that just breeds more laughter. Laughter puts all of us at ease.

Laughter is big business too. How many people make their livings making people laugh or do stand up comedy? Humor is an escape and a time out from all of the pressing things in our lives.

The best comedy so much of the time is based on truth and things that really happened. The things children say or the content of a marital quarrel or someone falling down. Yes, I said it. What in the world is so funny about someone falling that triggers the inner child in us and reduces us to laughing so hard tears began to flow?

Comedians like Bill Cosby, Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld have all been so successful due to their ability to take everyday situations we can all relate to and make them into funny stories with precise comedic timing.

Thankfully, I am not so young that I never had the opportunity to see the old comedy shows when I was a kid. I still remember laughing every time I watched The Carol Burnett Show. That show was so stinking funny and to this day, I still think the dentist skit with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman is one of the best ever. The skit still makes me laugh.

I wish the networks would drop some of these exploitive reality shows that bring out the worst nature of people and bring back the comedy variety show. Maybe the networks could make people laugh again, help us forget about layoffs and foreclosures and wars and political policies for just a little while.

I need some laughs. Anyone with me on that?

Q. Where did General Washington hide his armies?

A. Up his sleevies.

My ten year old daughter told me this with a straight face. She'll do well, I know.

Great stuff. It doesn't look like you need too much help with all of these skits! It made me crack up!

Laughter is so important to me, especially with having to live with my Lupus. The Carol Burnett show was my favorite.

Great Blog; I love to laugh and have actually been rsponsible for the laughter of a room full of my friends. I really am a funny guy but, unfortunately what's happening to our country now is no laughing matter! We can either all wait patiently in our tennis shoes for Hell Bop to come back around while we silently sip the "yes we can" kool aid or we can rise up like the Phoenix from the ashes of the 2008 elections and throw this bunch of Socialists out on their RED REARS!

Absolutely! I love making my loved ones laugh, and I love laughing myself. Everyone needs to laugh more- they really should bring back all those comedy sketch shows (they're much more pleasant to watch than the news). In fact, I'm watching stand up on Comedy Central right now! Great hub :)

"A merry heart does good, like medicine" (Prov.17:22) Hey Pammy, this is why I love ya, (other than you are me sister in the Lord) because you make me laugh and bring healing to wounded spirits.

So a man walks into a bar with a duck on his head.

The man behind the bar says "Can I help You?"

and the duck says "Yea, can you get this man off my butt?!"

(you are really supposed to say the word that starts with an "a," a bit more effective for laughs) ha

GREAT hub! G

How true. When my older son was 16 or so, I was working on overdrive and in the process of yelling and knew I was over the edge but couldn't stop - he laughed because he realized this was not normal behavior for me and his laughter completely defused me and helped me come to grips with the fact I needed more sleep and fun in my life.

Great hub!

Laughter is more important than ever in these times. Sometimes the best laughs are from the most innocent things. We have a 6 year old going on 21 that keeps us rolling.

Great Hub.

Wonderful post! Laughter is (or should be) a huge part of life. The first thing we need to do is be able to laugh at ourselves, not taking ourselves so seriously. As I get older, it's easier to laugh at my mishaps. :-)

Perhaps the hardest I've ever laughed is when I saw Red Skelton perform in Omaha, NE. That man was a genius and the master of improv. Tim Conway and Bob Newhart are great. There's also a new guy -- Taylor Mason -- who is absolutely hilarious. He's a ventriloquist and has some clips on youtube ...

Believe it or not, I had a Red Skelton clip up on this hub at first, then went with Bill Cosby. Red Skelton was very funny.

What a great hub! I totally agree with you. We need to laugh a lot more. "The joy of the Lord is my strength"...when we have joy, it usually will come out in laughter...but laughter does not always indicate joy. Weird huh? Thanks for making us laugh!!!!

Oh I loved this. I was tearing up with laughter and my Parrot joined in too with his laughter making it all the funnier. LOL

That little guy in the yellow certainly had us both in a jolly good mood.

I remember seeing Bill Cosby do this skit somewhere when I was a young man and parent, he had me in stitches. He was always my favorite comedian for his lack of swearing and his natural wit and funny expressions. Gee thanks for making my day. LOL

The thing I enjoy about my husband the most? We laugh all the time! We laugh at shows, each other, life in general. You gotta have laughter to live well. And we're living VERY well!

Such a wonderously stated point of view...yes indeed, we need more laughter to fill our hearts and minds.
